Arsi ReyArsi Rey – República Dominicana
Arsi Rey was born in Los Angeles, CA in 1978. His parents, Maria Martinez and Arsenio Reyes, are both Dominican. When he was still a little baby his parents decided to move to Manhattan, NY, where they settled in Washington Heights, a predominantly Latin suburb. At age 8, his mother wanted to live closer to their family, so they again moved, this time to Miami, FL along with his two younger brothers and his newly born little sister.
While in Miami, Arsi started to develop an interest in the arts. He started participating in school events and he also took chorus classes. Striving to enhance his voice, he even took private singing lessons which allowed him to achieve his unique sound style. Today, he continues with the singing lessons from his personal voice trainer. Arsi´s fascination with music and lyrics comes from his mother who once told him “never lose your dreams”.
When he was 20 years old, Arsi signed a deal with Skyward Records. He worked on his first album and he recorded his first single, a ballad called “Special Girl”. Unfortunately the record company went under before the album hit the air waves in Miami. Towards the end of 1990 Arsi joined a Latin band called “Proyecto Uno”, managed by Hardball Records. Proyecto Uno finished their album under the name “A Otro Nivel” (At another level). This album included the hit single “Papi Chulo”. The single stayed in the Latin Billboard’s Top 25 for several weeks.
When he was growing up Arsi was inspired by such talents as Luther Vandross, LL Cool J and Michael Jackson, to name a few. Because of his Dominican heritage, he was also influenced by several types of Latin ballads and meringue. Artists include Wilfredo Vargas, Marc Anthony y Juan Luis Guerra, people who still have a big impact on his music.
As one of the winners in the online competition, Arsi Rey now represents the Dominican Republic in the new reality show known as “Batalla de las Americas”.
