Jonh F - Colombia

Jonh Fredy Gonzalez Varon, was born February 2nd, 1983 in Ibague, Colombia. He started singing in local radio stations when he was 4 years old. During his school years he used to read poetry and began writing songs. When he was in second grade he performed for the first time in front of an audience, including all the parents and all the kids from his school.

As a child, he would dream about being in front of thousands of people performing his own songs. He used to lock himself in his room with the stereo blasting with songs from Ricky Martin and Cheyanne using the TV remote as a microphone. He would queue the music and start his own little concert. On a few occasions people gathered to see the little spectacle.

After graduating from school in 2000, he bought his first guitar and kept going on the road in an effort to achieve his dreams. He was soon singing for several popular bands, singing pop, regional music and rancheras. One day he did a homemade recording session for a demo to be used for a contest sponsored by a local radio station called Tolima Stereo. He recorded his first single “When I´m without you…”, a song he composed for a friend that died. With the help of the radio station his single went into the first spot in the station´s line up. Tolima Stereo also introduced John to other artists which allowed him the opportunity to openn their concerts both in town and on the road.

Due to a broken heart he suffered he wrote the song “Angel”, a hip hop-ballad that climbed to first place and today is one of the most recognized songs on the Tolima station.

He has won many contests, but the most relevant are:

DIGALO CANTANDO (say it singing) – Caracol TV station, Colombia.

LAS ESTRELLAS DE RADIO RELOJ (the stars of Radio Reloj) - A contest for interpreters hosted by the Radio Reloj radio station in Ibague

EL INTERPRETE DE RCN (RCN´s Interpreter) - A national contest held by the RCN TV station.

EL FACTOR X (the x factor) - he was selected from a total of 1,500 contestants, and was the only representative of Ibague

BUSCANDO LAS ESTRELLAS (in search for stars) - Contest he won with a song he composed.

Today, Jonh represents Colombia in Batalla de las Americas.

Interview - Know our finalists

1. Do you like to sing in the shower? And if so, what songs do you sing?

I don’t like it anymore, I used to.

2. If you could trade places with somebody, who would you do it with?

I would love to be the president of the United States, even for a few minutes. I would ally with all the world leaders and form an organization that would deliver food, clothing and a place to stay for people with limited resources and all those living on the streets, the sick, the old and stray animals.

3. When you were a kid, what did you used to do to make your mother angry?

I still do it. She insists that I should not lend out my stuff, but I think that if God provided for me then I should share my blessings. She still gets mad when I lend my things but I don’t care anymore. She would also get mad when I stayed late in the park just playing my guitar and singing with my friends.

4. What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?

One time I wanted to show off my poetry skills and tried to memorize a 12 minute long poem. When I was up on stage, I forgot everything.

5. What are you most afraid of?

Negative people, envy, disbelief, liars, people that are not humble, evil.

6. What was one of the happiest times in your life?

One of the happiest times of my life was when I retired from the police force. My brothers pushed me to join the force, I quit on the 5th day during basic patrolman training. I cried like never before, and then decided “I don’t care if nobody in the world supports me, I´m going to be an artist”. The only one that supported me was my mother.

7. Did you have a nickname when you were a kid? And what was it?

When I was losing my baby teeth, my brothers used to call me “Doctor muelitas” or “Doctor Troncoso” who was a cartoon character on a TV tooth paste commercial. The character had huge white teeth in the front and my brothers said that I looked like him.

8. If you could ask for one wish, what would it be?

I would wish for all incurable diseases to disappear and for war to end. I would wish that everybody without shelter and food would find a home and that food was always on their table. That would make me happier than even accomplishing my singing ambitions.

9. What place would you like to visit?

Plenty! I would like to see the entire world. With the power of God I will.

10. If you where to be stranded on a deserted island, what book, movie, person and/or food would you take with you?

I would take a bible, a friend, a guitar, and a pencil.
